Daniel Jellins is an attorney at Relman Colfax. Daniel joined the firm in 2023 and practices in the civil rights counseling group. Daniel is committed to fighting against discrimination in emerging technologies, such as algorithms and artificial intelligence. Daniel applies this expertise to ensure that civil rights, fair lending, and consumer protection laws are enforced and to ensure that cutting-edge technologies do not amplify racism, ableism, sexism, classism, or any other modes of discrimination or bias.
Prior to joining the firm, Daniel spent time as a Staff Attorney and Clinical Teaching Fellow at Georgetown Law Center’s Communications and Technology Law Clinic, where he advocated for the first-of-its-kind law protecting people against discrimination in targeted advertising algorithms. He also supervised law students petitioning the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission. This work included protecting kids targeted by harmful social media design features and assisting people with disabilities harmed by lax enforcement of privacy policies.
Daniel is a leading voice at the intersection of civil rights and technology. He has written for notable publications, such as The Washington Post on algorithmic discrimination, The Brookings Institution on using the First Amendment to halt dark patterns of campaign fundraising, and The Verge on legal challenges over cryptocurrency reporting.
During law school, Daniel was the President of the Chicago Law Foundation, raising money for other law students pursuing careers in public interest. He was also the Treasurer of the Black Law Students Association. Daniel interned at the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and worked as a judicial intern for Judge Alfred H. Bennett, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas.
In his free time, Daniel is passionate about supporting a new generation of civil rights advocates. Daniel mentors University of Chicago college students interested in public interest work, plays kickball, and studies presidential history.
